A Brief History of Taekwondo
The International Style of Taekwondo (the original) as practiced at Odyssey Martial Arts evolved from Martial Arts such as "Tae Kyon", practised since the earliest records of more than 2000 years ago. Today, Tae Kwond-do has many followers thoughout the world and is considered to be not only one of the most effective forms of self-defense as it is often referred to as "The Art of Self Defense", but also of self development both physically and mentally.
It is impossible for any one person to claim full responsibility for Taekwondo's essence of that of any of the Martial Arts. Its elements and influences came from many different sources, people and even through observing nature. However, on Aprill 11th 1955, by definiton "Major General Choi Hong Hi 9th Dan" is the founder, by naming "Tae Kwon-do". in 1967 "Master Ree Ki Ha 8th Dan" brought ITF Style of traditional Taekwondo to Great Britain. in april of 2010, "Odyssey Martial Arts" based on the traditional International Style was founded by Mr Trent Lissa 3rd Dan and his family.
What is Taekwondo?
Taekwondo's sparring style fits into Kick Boxing like a glove, allowing us to cross train very easily and successfully in the sport. Tae kwon-do is a Korean Martial Art which literally translated means the "foot, hand, way", "Tae" means to jump, lick or smash with the foot, "Kwon" means fist, or chiefly to punch or destroy with the hand or fist and "Do" means art, way or method. Therefore Taekwondo is the scientific use of the mind and the body to affect the ultimate use of unarmed self-defence through intennsive training of the Mind, Body and Spirit.
